Pocatello Fire Dept. urges caution with fireworks

After first banning the use of fireworks throughout Bannock County, folks in Pocatello will be allowed to fire off fireworks for the 4th in some parts of the city.

The same day fireworks shops were allowed to open their doors and start selling, the Charlotte Fire started raging in Pocatello, and firework use was banned throughout the county.

Since then, fireworks have been anemic at the stands set up across the city.

“Yeah, we took a pretty big hit. People coming in occasionally, but I think overall we’ve done about a quarter of the sales we’ve done in previous years,” fireworks vendor Eric Shippen said.

The city will allow people to set off fireworks in some parts of the city Wednesday from noon to midnight.

Shippen said local leaders should be careful, but can’t treat people like children.

“I think it’s a good thing they’re watching it closely and keeping the area safe. On the other hand most people are responsible with fireworks, it’s just a few that are neglectful near dry areas,” Shippen said.

Pocatello Fire Dept, Assistant Chief Mike Williams wants people to stay extra cautious when setting off any fireworks Wednesday. He said any errant spark could quickly turn into an inferno.

“The problem this year is going to be that it’s going to grow so fast and get big so fast that we may not be able to keep it from taking more homes,” Williams said.

Williams said if people simply use legal fireworks, properly, in the areas allowed, everyone should be able to have a fun and safe Independence Day.

“If we can trust in our citizens to make sure that they comply with those things, then we’re going to be fine this year,” Williams said.
