Rexburg police continue search for woman and three children

A woman is accused of kidnapping her two kids for a second time and a third child that is not even her own.

Rexburg police are teaming up with out-of-state law enforcement to track this woman down.

The woman, Heather Anne John (or Heather Anne Fisher), of Orem, Utah took the same kids last December. Police were able to track her down, but she was never charged.

Police say John drove to Rexburg and despite not having custody, took her two biological daughters and another girl back to Utah.

When Detective Rick Schmitt responded to the original kidnapping call last December, he says he didn’t think it would have evolved into a deja-vu scenario seven months later.

“We get a lot of child custody interference things where parents don’t want to bring their children back at a certain time or things like that–but they usually do so it doesn’t turn into a big deal … like this time,” said Schmitt.

Police say they believe the kids are alright though, which is why an Amber Alert wasn’t issued this time.

“There’s no imminent danger of the children, plus we need to know the vehicle she left in to broadcast that out and we don’t have that,” said Schmitt.

Law enforcement says things will be different this time around. Child custody interference and kidnapping are both felonies.

“Dad has custody, mom only has supervised visitation, so it’s a child custody issue,” said Schmitt. “The older child is not hers, it’s from another mother so there’s where the kidnapping charges come in.”

We attempted to contact the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office for a response on why Heather Anne John was never charged. Our calls were not returned.
