Names released in Arimo shooting

Police have released the names of the couple involved in the apparent murder-suicide Monday morning.

The names are Lisa England 28, and Juan Canpal-Cio-Y Enoc, 49. Enoc was a Peruvian citizen with legal residency in the United States. Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen said it took some time for authorities to contact Enoc’s family in the U.S. and through the Peruvian consolate.

Nielsen said police were called to 35 Portneuf Ave. in Arimo around 8:30 a.m. on Monday for a reported shooting that detectives are now investigating as a murder-suicide, with a handgun as the weapon.

People in the tiny town of Arimo were shocked by the shooting and were in disbelief that police believe the happy, mellow man they knew — and his wife — could have been capable of such a deed.

The Sinclair gas station just off the interstate in Arimo is the kind of place where people can get a good burger and see their neighbors. It’s where Wendy Worlton works, and where she’d see the man who died come in all the time.

“He usually just came in when he needed little groceries, (such as) bread. He’d come in and have our food cause it was really good,” Worlton said.

On Sunday night, Worlton’s coworkers saw the couple come into the store, and Worlton said friends were texting them both after they left. She said there was no indication anything was wrong, and that on Monday afternoon, the dead woman’s family was puzzled.

“Nobody can explain this and nobody will be able to,” Worlton said.

Nielsen and the rest of his investigators are trying to do just that. Coroner Kim Quick has to examine the bodies to confirm whether or not this was a murder-suicide, and then investigators have to reconstruct the crime scene to try to figure out why a couple who seemed fine wasn’t.

Still, in Arimo, the questions didn’t end. Luis Arreola said the man was a family friend, and he can’t believe something so tragic happened so close to home.

“It’s kind of hard to believe, you know, especially since you don’t think of that stuff happening here, you know, but what do you do about it?” Arreola said.

The woman also had a 3-year-old daughter.

There have already been two homicides in Bannock County this year, and three deaths including the officer-involved shooting in McCammon. Nielsen said the county typically has one homicide about every five years, but according to recent statistics, crime is definitely up.

“I think most of the nation — and we’re not immune — there’s an awful lot of stress going on, and I think that stress with the economy, with jobs, with relationships, with all of those things are taking their toll,” Nielsen said.

He said he doesn’t think the trend will end anytime soon.
