Young driver falls asleep, collides with truck

Three youths from Chubbuck were taken to the hospital Tuesday after the teen driver fell asleep at the wheel and caused a crash, Idaho State Police said.

Around 8:20 a.m., a 15-year-old driver was driving a 1997 Toyota Camry southbound on Arbon Valley Highway near Interstate 86 in Power County when she fell asleep, drove left of the center line and collided head on with a 2007 Peterbuilt semi-truck.

She and her two passengers, ages 15 and 12, were transported to Portneuf Medical Center. The 12-year-old is still in the hospital, but is stable condition. The others were treated and released.

The eastbound onramp to Interstate 86 was blocked from the time of the crash until around 11:00 a.m. while crews worked to remove the truck.
