Man arrested after driving car into canal

A man who drove a car into a canal on U.S. 91 near Fort Hall Sunday night was arrested Tuesday.

Ernest Bercier Jr. of Aberdeen, 47, was arrested by Bannock County Sheriff’s deputies on felony charges of eluding an officer.Bercier also faces misdemeanor charges of driving without privileges and reckless driving.

Idaho State Police said Bercier was attempting to outrun a Bannock County deputy around 10 p.m. Sunday after failing to stop for a traffic violation.After colliding with a van, Bercier drove into a canal.

No one in the van was seriously hurt.

Bercier and his passenger, 43-year-old Glenda Dixey of Pocatello, were transported to Portneuf Medical Center for treatment.

Bercier was arrested upon release from the hospital Tuesday afternoon.
