Father charged in university student stabbing

A 61-year-old Iranian man accused of stabbing his son at the University of Utah has been charged with assault and attempted homicide.

Court records say police found Forghan Ghodrati banging his head against a concrete wall behind a trash bin outside a university apartment. He reportedly told a nurse he was trying to kill the 28-year-old, then himself.

Police have said Ghodrati was reacting to family strife – his wife and another son planned to leave him because of his mental illness.

Court records say he paid the visit Sunday, asked his son to translate a government document, then stabbed him with a kitchen knife.

The student is recovering from liver wounds.

Charges were filed Wednesday in 3rd District Court. It wasn’t clear if he had a lawyer. No phone listings could be found for family members.
