Kitanna Belnap recognized as outstanding student

Century High School senior Kitanna Belnap excels in speech, debate, dancing and volunteerism. Those traits helped her win the United Dairymen of Idaho Distinguished Student Award.

Public speaking doesn’t phase Kitanna. In fact, Kitanna actually enjoys getting up in front of an audience and giving a speech, or taking a side in a debate. In addition to having fun, Kitanna has learned some important lessons from debate.

“Through debate, I’ve really been able to organize my thoughts,” Kitanna said. “That helps in essay writing, it helps in organizing all my school work, and it helps that I can effectively communicate with others and express my views.”

As much as she enjoys speaking in public, there’s another activity Kitanna is even more passionate about.

“Dance team – – I absolutely love dance,” Kitanna said. “I’ve been dancing since I was four years old. Getting up there and being able to display my talent through moving and expression — I absolutely love dancing and there’s no place I’d rather call home than the stage.”

One of Kitanna’s favorite activities was being the director of student volunteers for Brooklyn’s Playground.”

“It’s a playground here in Pocatello that’s all access — it specializes in being a handicapped accessible playground,” Kitanna said. “It was the first playground of its kind in all of Southeast Idaho. Every time I go back to Brooklyn’s I see how much these people enjoy this playground, so as far as community work is concerned, I’m really passionate about it. I really like to give back to the community, and it’s something I plan to do in the future.”

Kitanna plans to go on to college, maybe join the peace corps and possible pursue a PHD in constitutional law.
