All safe after Rexburg bomb scare

Traffic is moving again on Main Street in Rexburg.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office closed Main Street for a couple of hours Monday afternoon between the Idaho State Highway 33 exit of U.S. Highway 20 and 12th West when a suspicious package was found near propane gas tanks at Alpine Propane in Rexburg.

The Idaho Falls Bomb Squad was called in to remove the package to a safe location.

It was later learned that the “package” was a safe that contained papers. A customer of the propane dealer left the safe in front of the business.

“When we arrived at work today there was a digital personal safe on top of our propane cylinder cage, ” said Shane Johnson, the general manager of Alpine Propane, in a statement to the media. “We at Alpine Propane take the personal safety of our employees, our customers and the communities in which we serve very seriously. “No note or indication as to whom it belonged to was present, and due to the recent explosion in nearby Jackson Hole, Wyoming, we did not want to compromise the safety of the community, which was why we called the local authorities. We are grateful no one was injured, and appreciate the prompt response from the local authorities and emergency response personnel.”

Johnson said the company was required by the Homeland Security Act to report any suspicious activity immediately.

Investigation is continuing.
