Locals make fudge for troops

The North Hi-Way Caf in Idaho Falls held its 10th annual fudge and divinity contest, but it’s not your average baking competition.

Years ago, locals wanted to do something for the troops overseas. So the tradition was born.

Now people bring in a pound of homemade fudge to send to the troops… but not without having a little friendly competition themselves.

The fudge is judged on color, texture, originality and taste.

After the event ends, the candy is divided up into smaller containers and shipped overseas. Each package is personalized with a note from someone in our community.

“Since we’ve started this two different times we’ve had a particular person come in who said ‘you don’t know me I don’t know and you, but i was over in Iraq or Afghanistan, and all of sudden this little fudge and divinity came and it had inspiring words,’ and that just really makes it all worth while that’s why they do it is so they know that we’re thinking about them during the holiday season,” Roxanne Smith the co-owner.

This year, some of the fudge flavors were caramel apple, latte and cinnamon.
