Lava Elementary School in top five schools

A giant check was presented to Lava Elementary School for outstanding performance in testing.

Lava Elementary is now a top five rewards school in Idaho.

The state rankings were based on test scores from spring 2015. Lava students scored almost 12% above the state average in English and 29% above in math.

The school currently has 62 students and four teachers.

The school held a celebration Thursday night where the state presented them with a check for $25,000.

Lava Elementary is the only school in the Southeast region to receive this award. Three other schools were in Northern Idaho, and one in Boise.

Principal Nancy Dalley said she couldn’t be more proud of her students.

“It was extremely exciting for a school this size to receive an award, especially with the monetary amount that came with it,” said Dalley. “It’s just been overwhelming.”

Dalley said the school plans to use the money for new computers, textbooks and an online reading program.
