Children’s author visits Pocatello

A famous children’s author, Roseanne Greenfield Thong, is visiting Pocatello.

On Monday, she made her first stop at Syringa Elementary School to talk to the kids about how to find and write a story.

Thong came as part of the Bellan visiting authors’ series in Pocatello.

She talked to students about how to find a story in everyday things.

She read one of her books to them, and signed copies of others for the school to keep.

Having grown up in California, Thong spent several years living and teaching in Hong Kong. She showed the kids pictures from her time there, and what inspired several of her stories.

Thong said anyone can write.

“All of us have stories inside of us,” said Thong. “It doesn’t matter what background you’re from, which school you’ve gone to. Everybody has wonderful stories that they can share.”

Her advice to kids is that they don’t have to have a background in writing. Thong said just write about what you love.

“I tell students first write from what you know,” said Thong. “We’re all experts at something. Then secondly, try and think out of the box and expand a little bit from what you know and use some layers of imagination.”
