May primary ballots filled

Friday marked the deadline for candidates interested in running for public office to file their nominating petitions prior to the May 17 primary election.

At the top of the ballot, incumbent Idaho Senator Mike Crapo will not face opposition in the Republican primary. Boise businessman, Democrat Jerry Sturgill announced he will challenge Crapo in the general election. Two Constitution Party candidates will also appear on the primary ballot. They are Ray Writz of Coeur d’Alene and Pro-Life of Letha.

Three Democrats and three Republicans are seeking nomination in the 1st Congressional District. Incumbent Raul Labrador of Eagle faces a challenge from Gordon Counsil of Caldwell and Isaac M. Hauagen of Santa Rosa, California. Shizandra Fox of Glen Ellen, California, Staniela Nikolova of Moscow, and James Piotrowski of Boise will seek the Democratic nomination in May.

2nd District Congressman Mike Simpson will face a primary challenge by Lisa Marie of Boise. Jennifer Martinez of Boise will run as a Democrat and Anthony Tomkins as a Constitution Party candidate.

In Bannock County, incumbent Republican District 2 County Commissioner Steve Hadley will face a challenge from Evan S. Frasure, David D. Packer, and Dennis H. Spencer. Jim Carter and Roger Hernandez will face off for the Democratic nomination. Incumbent Republican District 3 County Commissioner Howard Manwaring will face Michael L. Orr, and Terrel “Ned” Tovey in the Republican primary. Linda Leeuwrik and Chelsea Wilkerson will face off in the Democratic primary. And Kevin Lee Perry will run unopposed as Libertarian. Incumbent Sheriff Lorin Nielsen and Prosecutor Stephen Herzog, both Democrats, will be unopposed.

In Bear Lake County, incumbent Republican Commissioners Rex Payne and Vaughn Rasmussen are running unopposed. John Martinez, Bart Heslington, and Blake Wells, all Republicans are running for Sheriff. Incumbent Republican Prosecutor Steven A. Wuthrich will face a challenge from Joseph Randy Hayes, and John H. Olson in the May primary.

There will be no contested local races in Bingham County. Commissioners Whitney Manwaring and A. Ladd Carter, Sheriff Craig Rowland, and Prosecutor Cleve Colson, all Republicans, are unopposed.

In Bonneville County, incumbent Republican District 2 County Commissioner Dave Radford will face a challenge from Jonathan Walker. Commissioner Lee Staker is not seeking re-election in District 3. Two Republicans, Tony Potts and Bryon L. Reed will seek the job in the May primary election. Republican Sheriff Paul J. Wilde and republican Prosecuting Attorney Daniel R. Clark face no opposition.

In Butte County, Sheriff Wes Collins, 2nd District Commissioner Rose Bernal, and Prosecuting Attorney candidate Steve Stephens are unopposed. The race for 3rd District County Commissioner includes Brian Harrell and Rory Pancheri. All are Republicans.

The only contested race in Caribou County will be for Sheriff. Incumbent Republican Michael Haderlie faces a challenge from Kelly Wells, Gary Etchison, and Phillip Christensen. Incumbent Commissioner Mark Matthews is unopposed. Bryce Somsen will run un-opposed in the Republican primary for the other Commissioner seat.

There will be only one primary race in Clark County. Republican candidates Dusty Shifflett and David Warrent are running for County Commissioner in District 3. District 2 Commissioner Gregory Shenton, County Clerk Kerri Ellis, and Sheriff Bart May, all Republicans, are unopposed.

In Custer County, Republicans Randy Corgatelli and Dale C. Olson will face off for County Commissioner District 2. Republicans Max Bingham and Steve Smith will face off in May for Commission in District 3. The winner will face Independent Campbell Gardett in November. Republican Sheriff Stu Lumpkin will face a challenge from Craig Winstead. Republican Lisa O’Brien will run unopposed for county prosecutor.

There will be only one challenge in Franklin County. Incumbent Republican Commissioner Scott Workman will face a challenge from Robert C. Swainston. Sheriff David Fryar, Prosecutor Vic A. Pearson, and Treasurer Janet Kimpton, all Republicans, are unopposed.

In Fremont County, LeRoy Miller and Larry Singleton are seeking the Republican nomination for County Commissioner in District 2. Republicans Val Hammond and Jordon Stoddard are running for Commissioner in District 3. Marcia Murdoch will challenge Karl Lewies for Prosecutor. Sheriff Len Humphries will run unopposed.

Although all candidates are republicans, there will be some contested races in Jefferson County in May. Running for the District 3 County Commission seat are Ken Hall, Fred Martinez, Richard Savage, and Roger K. Young. Five people want to be county prosecutor including Paul Butikofer, David Brown, Steven Dalling, Ashley Graham, and Christopher Schmidt. Incumbent Steve Anderson is seeking his first elected term as Sheriff, and Scott Hancock is seeking the District 2 Commissioner’s seat.

Three republicans will seek the District 3 Commissioner’s job in Lemhi County. They include Brett Barsalou, F.H. Rowdy Davis, and Ray Henderson. The winner will face democrat Bob Blackadar in November. Republican Richard Snyder and Democrat Louise Wagenknecht will face off for County Commission District 2 this fall. Republican Steve Penner is unopposed in his bid for Sheriff and republican P. Bruce Withers is unopposed for prosecuting attorney..

In Madison County, District 2 Commissioner Jon Weber will face Jason Drollinger in the May primary. Republicans Cameron Stanford and Rick Henry are running for Sheriff. Incumbent District 3 Commissioner Todd Smith and Prosecutor Sid Brown, both Republicans, are unopposed.

Incumbent Democratic Sheriff Jim Jeffries is running unopposed in Power County. Republicans Ryan C. Peterson and Abe Luca are running for County Prosecutor. Republican District 2 County Commissioner William “Bill” Wesley is running unopposed. In District 3, Republican Delayne Anderson and independent Lynn Scherer will face off in November.

Teton County District 3 Republican county commissioner Kelly Park faces a challenge from Roger Voegtlin and Mark Ricks in the May primary. The winner will face Democrat Stephen Dyer in November. Incumbent district 2 Democratic Commissioner Bill Leake faces Republican Harley Wilcox this fall. Sheriff Tony Liford filed for reelection as a Republican. Liford is unopposed in May. He will face Democrat Lindsey Moss in November. Democratic Prosecutor Kathy Spitzer is unopposed.
