Caldwell school district faces complaint

Caldwell School District is in the process of hiring a new superintendent.
The school board made an offer to Bonneville School District 93’s director of human resources, Dr. Shalene French.
However, after receiving a complaint that the board violated an open meeting law, the school board has voided their offer to French and will revisit the hiring issue.

“They want to do it right,” said French. “When you think about it, school boards are volunteers. They are community leaders who want to see our schools be successful. They want to see our school district be successful. It’s a learning curve for them as well; for anybody who would volunteer to help at a school.”

Caldwell interim superintendent Jodie Mills said the board just got ahead of itself in their excitement for French to be part of the district.
The job was offered to French by board chairman Charles Stout. He referred to it as a unanimous decision, but no vote had actually been taken.

Trustee Kent Marmon said, “I think the feeling among the board meetings was that we supported Dr. French, although nobody ever took a vote.”

“I’ve been asked that, ‘Are you sure you want to because it can be so challenging?’ Their enthusiasm and their desire to just get better and do better for the children in Caldwell,” said French. “It’s hard to not want to be a part of that.”

Mills said the board will be meeting Monday and voting on the superintendent decision. It has been noted in the board agenda and is available to the public.
