Public invited to preview Hitt &17th intersection construction project
It’s one of the most notorious intersections in eastern Idaho and it’s finally getting a remake. Idaho Falls and Ammon are working together to expand the intersection of Hitt Road and 17th Street and have the design plans finalized.
Plans include to widen the intersection to include two left-turn lanes in all directions, and dedicated right turn lanes on all sides except for west-bound traffic. Idaho Falls will also extend medians along both roads to create smoother traffic flow in and out of area parking lots.
People interested in seeing draft plans for the intersection can attend an open house Wednesday at EITC cafeteria from 4:30 – 6:30 PM. City staff and design team members will be on hand to answer any questions. Public input is also welcome.
Idaho Falls and Ammon have seen rapid growth in the past recent years meaning major intersections like Hitt and 17th street have seen a huge increase in traffic volume.
Idaho Falls city leaders said in a September city council meeting that the intersection has been well over capacity since the early 2000’s, and is one of the most dangerous intersections in the city.
Both Ammon and Idaho Falls have been working off-and-on for years to get this project going. Total costs to expand and remake the intersection are expected to cost the two cities a combined $2.6 million with Ammon paying $1 million and Idaho Falls paying the remaining $1.6 million.
