Tracking seasonal temperatures and a nice weekend outlook
High pressure is taking control of our weather, and that means a welcome stretch of sunshine, lighter winds and seasonable fall temperatures across Eastern Idaho and Western Wyoming. It's a great setup for getting outside, enjoying the fall colors and making the most of the local Halloween festivities. If Boo at the Zoo is on your calendar starting tonight, the weather looks cooperative, but you'll want to dress for the temperature drop after sunset!
Thursday: Sunshine, Light Winds and Plenty of Fall Fun
Expect a bright, comfortable fall day with plenty of sunshine and afternoon highs approaching 60 degrees in the Snake River Plain. Light winds will keep conditions pleasant, making this a good day for walking the dog, taking an afternoon stroll, running errands or squeezing in some outdoor chores before the next weather system approaches early next week.
We'll be near seasonal averages, with typical mid-October highs around 61 degrees in Idaho Falls and 63 degrees in Pocatello. The sunshine should make it feel pleasant in the afternoon, especially in sheltered spots, but don't let the midday warmth fool you. Mornings will start chilly, and temperatures will fall quickly once the sun goes down.
What to wear: A light jacket or hoodie should work well for afternoon activities, but plan on warmer layers for early-morning commutes and evening events. If you're heading to Boo at the Zoo, dress in layers, wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a heavier coat for the kids. Costumes may look great, but make sure there's enough room underneath for a warm layer!
Friday: A Little Extra Warmth
We'll keep the pleasant weather going Friday, with temperatures trending warmer as high pressure continues to influence the region. Sunshine and lighter winds should make for another enjoyable autumn day, ideal for outdoor projects, lunch outside when temperatures allow, or getting a head start on weekend plans.
The morning will still be crisp, so you'll want that extra layer on the way to work or school. By afternoon, conditions should be more comfortable for spending time outdoors. If you're planning a weekend drive through the countryside to enjoy the fall scenery, Friday looks like a good opportunity to get out and enjoy it.
What to wear: Start with a jacket or sweatshirt in the morning. You may be comfortable shedding a layer during the afternoon, but keep it handy for the ride home.
Saturday: Mild Fall Weather Continues
Saturday may wobble a little in the temperature department, but we're still looking at highs in the mid-60s. That's a nice bonus for the middle of October and favorable weather for yardwork, fall cleanup, pumpkin picking, outdoor sports and family activities.
The mild afternoon temperatures should make it easier to spend more time outside without bundling up quite as much. However, cooler morning temperatures will remain a factor, particularly in rural areas, mountain valleys and Western Wyoming. If you're heading toward the higher elevations, expect a cooler feel than you'll find in the Snake River Plain.
What to wear: Layers are still the way to go. A sweatshirt or light jacket should be comfortable for much of the afternoon, while a warmer coat will be useful early and late in the day.
Sunday: Another Bright Day to Enjoy the Outdoors
Sunday looks bright as we continue to take advantage of this stretch of quieter weather. Temperatures should remain relatively mild, making it a good day for a scenic drive, a walk along the Greenbelt, outdoor recreation or getting the family outside before the next change arrives.
It's also a good opportunity to finish those outdoor chores you've been putting off. Check the gutters, bring in any remaining garden supplies, secure lightweight outdoor decorations and take care of last-minute yardwork while conditions are favorable.
The bigger weather story is what happens as we head into next week. Our dry stretch won't last forever, so enjoy the sunshine while it's here.
Monday and Tuesday: Clouds Return, With Rain and a Wintry Mix Possible
Changes are possible early next week as moisture moves back into the region. Clouds may increase, and chances for showers could develop, with some locations potentially seeing a wintry mix by Tuesday.
The exact timing and precipitation type will depend on how temperatures and the incoming system evolve. Colder locations, higher elevations and Western Wyoming may be more susceptible to a rain-and-snow mix than lower elevations of the Snake River Plain. Even so, the forecast remains subject to change, so keep an eye on updated forecasts as we get closer.
If you have outdoor plans early next week, consider taking advantage of the drier weather through the weekend. It's also a good time to check your vehicle's winter-readiness kit, make sure windshield washer fluid is topped off and keep a warmer coat available for those colder mornings.
The Bottom Line
High pressure is giving Eastern Idaho and Western Wyoming a welcome taste of classic fall weather: sunshine, light winds and temperatures climbing toward 60 degrees Thursday, with additional warmth Friday and highs in the mid-60s possible Saturday. Sunday looks bright as well, giving us a terrific window for outdoor activities and Halloween fun.
Enjoy the mild afternoons, but remember that fall mornings and evenings can still be chilly. Keep the layers handy, especially for outdoor events, and watch for a possible return of showers and a wintry mix by Tuesday.
