Update: Avalanche cleared, Teton Pass reopens for traffic

Update 12/16/2016 10:00 am: The avalanche that was blocking Teton Pass has been cleared as of 9 am Friday morning. The road is now open for traffic again.

Original story: An avalanche has blocked both lanes of Wyoming Highway 22. The road is the known as the Teton Pass.

The slide was reported just before 5 p.m. Thursday.

The road will be closed at least overnight, the Teton County Emergency Management reported.

Stephanie Harsha, public relations specialist for WYDOT District 3 told the Jackson Hole News and Guide the avalanche may have been triggered by a skier.

Search and rescue crews were checking out the area for any possible victims.

The landslide is on the east side of the summit, near the Twin Slides ski route they said.

The Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center in Jackson has issued a backcountry avalanche warning in effect from 6 pm Thursday evening until 6 pm Friday.
