With the snowfall, don’t forget to shovel walkways
With the recent snow fall, local cities want to remind people to shovel their walkways and sidewalks on their property. Just like roads, sidewalks can be slick. Idaho law requires people to keep the sidewalks on their property clear of obstructions, like snow.
Cities that are large enough to have sidewalks usually have ordinances prescribing maintenance after a snowstorm. Below are a some of the cities in our region that have those ordinances. Also included are city specific rules such as a time table after an official snow event, exceptions for who doesn’t have to shovel, or rules as to where you can shovel if listed.
Soda Springs – Required, people are allowed to shovel snow onto streets. Pocatello – Required, must be done within 24 hours of snow event, not allowed to shovel snow onto roadways. Cubbuck – Required according to city spokesman, does not have specific ordinance. Blackfoot – Required, people aren’t allowed to shovel snow onto roadways. Idaho Falls – Required, must be done within 24 hours of snow event, has written exceptions for disabled, elderly, and pregnant women. Ammon – Required, must be done within 72 hours of snow event. Rigby – Required, not allowed to shovel onto streets where possible. Rexburg – Required, must be done within 24 hours of snow event. St. Anthony – Required, must be done within 12 hours of snow event. Salmon – Required, no specific time frame. Driggs – Required, must be done within 24 hours of snow event. Jackson, WY – Required, businesses must clear snow within 6 hours of snow event, not allowed to shovel snow onto roadways.
Another common rule shared by most cities is that fire hydrants and mail boxes need to be kept clear.
The above list is not a complete list as their are dozens of other cities within the region. These are just some of the bigger towns and cities with sidewalk networks.
