Idaho Falls attorney named 7th District Judge
Idaho Falls defense attorney and former prosecutor Stevan Thompson has been appointed by Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter as the newest 7th District Court Judge.
Thompson will replace Judge Alan Stephens when Stephens retires March 1, 2018. He will be based in Rigby.
“The qualities that recommend Stevan for the bench reflect the maturity and perspective that comes with his many years of experience representing clients in state and federal courts, along with a refreshing regard for our judicial system and its role in upholding the rule of law,” Governor Otter said.
“I am honored that the Governor has placed his confidence in me, as I know he considers judicial appointments to be very important to the citizens of this state,” Thompson said. “I look forward to meeting the challenges that come with the position, and intend to do everything in my power to promote public confidence in the judicial branch of government.”
Thompson, 61, has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho and attended the Gonzaga University College of Law before receiving his law degree from the University of Idaho. The Jerome native was a deputy prosecutor in Bonneville County for about four years and prosecutor in Clark County for two years, but has focused primarily on criminal defense since 1990. He has been a partner since 2007 in the law firm Thompson, Smith, Woolf, Anderson, Wilkinson & Birch, PLLC.
