WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department will no longer allow its political appointees to go to fundraisers or other campaign events. The new restrictions handed down Tuesday are aimed at maintaining the department’s independence. Attorney General Merrick Garland says he is issuing the restrictions to make sure that politics won’t affect the way the department enforces the law, both in fact and appearance. The announcement comes as he oversees investigations including the FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s home and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
