Crop duster crashes near Bancroft

An Arizona pilot escaped serious injury after he crashed the plane he was flying at around 1:18 p.m. Monday in Caribou County.

The Caribou County Sheriff’s Office said the plane crashed into a hillside just west of 2629 Kelly Toponce Road near Bancroft.

The pilot, identified as Curtis E. Hill, 56, of Somerton, Arizona, was flying a 1977 Piper PA 36 Brave for Hill Ag Air, LLC, of Malad.

Hill was spraying a field with agricultural chemicals. The plane lost lift on its second flyover. Hill attempted to dump the chemicals but failed. The airplane struck the hillside and briefly caught fire. The chemicals onboard extinguished the fire.

HIll was taken to Caribou Memorial Hospital by ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening minor injuries.

The Caribou County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
