ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, Louisiana (WDSU) — At least two people have died and around 30 more are injured following a multi-car pileup involving around 100 vehicles, authorities said Monday morning.

It happened around Monday morning on Interstate 55 near milepost 22 in St. John the Baptist Parish, just outside of New Orleans.

Three 18-wheelers were involved in the accident and at least two were fully engulfed in flames, authorities said.

Sheriff Mike Tregre told WDSU that at least two people have died, around 30 people are injured and 100 cars were involved in the crash.

Officials with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s are asking drivers to avoid I-55 North and South starting at milepost 22.

The roads are shut down as crews work to clear the debris, and help those wounded or injured.

All lanes are opened on I-10 West at I-310 South.

The last massive pileup the city has experienced was December 29, 2011 in New Orleans East, which killed two and injuring more than 50 others.
