Tips for a healthy holiday season

MGN

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – 'Tis the season to enjoy some sweet holiday treats, but doctors are encouraging us to be mindful as we indulge.

Nutritionist reports show more than 40% of American adults are now obese, and that number could be on the rise this season.

Doctors say the issue isn't about enjoying a sweet treat, it's more-so about over eating and avoiding exercise.

"If you're not active, you don't need a body, and literally your body will deteriorate," said Dr. Udo Erasmus, an expert in Nutrition and Psychology. "If you're not active and you go to eat, you got to burn what you eat. So you should eat when you're hungry. Eat more raw. If you can eat more plant based as much as possible."

Dr. Erasmus gives tips on the possible best ways to put our health first:

  • Managing stress, focusing on the peace and joy this season can bring.
  • Taking quality supplements like Omega-3 plant-based oils, probiotics and digestive enzymes.
  • Taking control of your diet.

He encourages us to eat until the point of satisfaction, not to the point of overload.

"You eat when you're hungry," Dr. Erasmus said. "You know, just because the cookies are there, you don't have to eat them. Ask yourself, 'Why am i actually hungry?' Right? And then when you're eating, chew and eat slowly, because it's very easy to overeat if you eat fast because it takes a while to digest and your blood sugar, you know, it takes a while. So you tend to eat more than you need to eat if you're not eating slowly."

Above all, he says we should primarily focus on peace and love with others but also ourselves.
