Report: Wyoming home to most vaccine-hesitant counties in US

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has made public statistical models showing that Wyoming is home to the 11 most coronavirus vaccine-hesitant counties in the country.

The models show 32% of residents in Johnson, Converse, Washakie, Crook, Niobrara, Weston, Natrona, Goshen, Campbell, Platte and Carbon counties are hesitant about getting vaccinated, more than any other counties in the U.S., the Casper Star-Tribune reported Wednesday.

Each of the state's 23 counties were in the top 1% for most hesitant in the U.S., according to the models. Mississippi, North Dakota and South Dakota were the only states that reported similarly reluctant residents.

The models relied on a U.S. Census Bureau survey assessing public attitude toward the vaccines.

The report did not provide a margin of error for each county and said the estimates could be swayed by a number of variables. Government statisticians used the survey to predict how communities would respond to vaccination efforts.

The data came as federal regulators halted administration of the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine while officials investigate a potential link between the shot and a rare blood clot that was identified in six people in the U.S. Wyoming has stopped distributing the one-shot vaccine, which about 10,000 state residents have received.

More than 30% of the state's population has received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 20% of the state is fully vaccinated.
