Paint On Car Windows May Lead To A Ticket

A lot of people like to have fun with their cars and paint their windows, especially during special events like a graduation or a wedding. However, what most don’t know is that they might be breaking the law.

It’s something many people do without thinking twice about but law enforcement said they should. Drivers can, in fact, be pulled over and ticketed for having their windshield and windows painted.

“State law just says that the window can’t obstruct the driver’s view of the highway, so it’s the same as frost in the winter time when people don’t scrape their windows,” said Sgt. Dave Frei of the Idaho Falls Police Department.

Idaho Falls High School senior, Katelyn Kennedy, says a lot of her classmates paint their car windows.

“Yeah, a lot of people ask people to dances and stuff by writing on their car,” said Kennedy.

Kennedy says she knows better than to paint her own car to the point where she can’t see and that’s something police officers say everyone should take a little more seriously.

In one instance, IFPD pulled the driver of a Honda over for window obstruction.

“It was the windshield,” said Paul Murray, IFPD officer. “A person would not be able to navigate appropriately down the roadway and he told me that he could see fine through the lettering.”

Police said they see this type of violation the most during graduation season, school dances and even sporting events. They also said they see adults using this paint when trying to sell their car, as was the case in that photo.

Idaho state law indicates if you’re ticketed for this type of traffic violation, you could be fined over $60.
