Accidental 911 call hastens police response to school gun situation

Police’s quick response to Wednesday’s gun scare at Skyline High School was in part because of a pocket dial.

Skyline Principal Scott Miller said a student accidentally called 911 from her cell, and when dispatch called the school’s resource officer to ask what was going on, he was just getting word there might be a gun in the school.

Officers from the Idaho Falls Police Department, Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office and Idaho State Police responded to the school around 10:45 a.m. A District 91 spokesperson said police were responding to a report that a student had brought a gun to school.

Skyline was in lockdown mode for about an hour.

The only weapon found was an Airsoft pistol in a locker.

The student, a 15-year-old boy, is being charged with possession of a weapon or firearm on school property, a misdemeanor. He did not threaten any other student, teacher or staff member at the school with the Airsoft pistol, police said.

Police said all students are safe. The school day resumed as normal around noon.
