Locals honor Connecticut shooting victims

With Friday’s shooting in Connecticut on almost everyone’s mind, numerous local people decided to do something to show support and remembrance for the victims and their families.

Courthouse square in Blackfoot had a small but thoughtful vigil on Friday night.

Long, white candles were held by the few that were there. They covered with simple plastic cups.

Even some children showed up with their parents, but with the snow and cold, the people there said they didn’t expect much of a turnout. But those at the vigil said wherever people were Friday night, they should be with their families.

“I know there’s a lot of people who have children and grandkids,” vigil organizer Sam Lopez said. “Just hold them tightly and let them know and reassure them that they are loved. If they have questions, talk to them and let them know what’s going on.”

Another movement got it’s start on Facebook. Numerous people told us they are leaving their front porch lights on as a tribute.

We found homes along West 20th Street in Idaho Falls lit up. Karole Honas knocked on Amanda Love’s door who had her light on. Love said she called all of her friends and family and asked them to turn on their lights.

“We’re trying to let the families in Connecticut know that we’re behind them,” Love said. “For as far away as we are, we want them to know we’re with them.”
