Grant could open recreational trail

The Driggs City Council will consider a grant request Tuesday night that could open a vast new recreational trail.

Driggs is proposing a $194,000 grant request through the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation’s Recreational Trails Program to acquire former rail bed lands or easements between Driggs and Tetonia. The city would commit to a local match of $38,800.

The acquisition would connect the Ashton to Tetonia Rails to Trails path with the Victor to Driggs pathway. Together, the trail would create a 45-mile pathway from Victor to Ashton. It would be used for year-round recreational use, including nonmotorized summer users and snowmobilers during the winter.

Supporters said it would provide the “missing link” to a trail system that would ultimately stretch from Island Park to Victor.
