Idaho Falls man invents “Smart PJ’s”

Whether it’s a comfy pair of pajamas or a good book, it seems like parents are always looking for ways to make bedtime fun for younger kids.

An Idaho Falls man found a way to combine both of those tactics and created what he’s named “Smart PJ’s.”

Smart PJ’s are the first and only interactive pajamas for young kids. It’s essentially a onesie that uses a smart phone application to give parents and children a new way to have fun before bed.

“It’s a new spin on pajamas,” said Juan Murdoch, inventor. “Pajamas have been around for thousands of years and this is something new.”

Juan Murdoch isn’t a full-time inventor, he’s a local realtor. So when the idea of a pajama that entices kids to hear a bedtime story or a lullaby popped in his head, he said he just ran with it.

“I don’t know if it was the dad in me,” said Murdoch. “My wife and I have 6 kids, so I know how important a bedtime story is.”

The dots on the pajamas aren’t just for design. They’re actually QR codes that phones can scan through the free Smart PJ’s app.

Altogether, each pair of pajamas has close to 50 different codes that will work on all Apple and Android products.

“So what you do is you take a picture of one of the dot groups,” said Murdoch. “Make sure you only get one and hit save.”

Then your smart phone or tablet reads the book, sings the lullaby, or gives you interesting facts about different animals — depending on the code.

“It makes me proud. I’m a local. I was raised here and have lived here all of my life,” said Murdoch. “It’s cool to bring that technology out there and it’s something unique to Idaho.”

Murdoch said he’s been selling these Smart PJ’s for about three months now and has managed to sell about 100 pairs each month.

He said they’re 100 percent cotton and the codes won’t fade when you wash them.
