No additional charges in pipe bomb case for now

For now, additional charges will not be brought against a man who was found to have a pipe bomb in his house, the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Shawn Heath told authorities he was using the device to clear out beaver dams near his home, said sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Jeff Edwards.

But Edwards said authorities have not ruled out charges in the future, which may or may not be related to the pipe bomb.

Heath was already in jail after being arrested over the weekend on a charge of felony attempted strangulation and a misdemeanor drug charge.

Heath’s girlfriend was at the house accompanied by deputies on the 12000 North block of 115 East near Ririe to pick up some belongings when she discovered the pipe bomb Monday. It was a 5-inch galvanized pipe with twist-on caps on each end. Heath had told her not to touch anything in the bedroom. Deputies said they also found bomb-making materials in the bedroom.

Heath’s preliminary hearing is set for October.
