Man offers $4,000 reward after finding dog shot, killed

Ian Chestnut found his dog dead and impaled by an arrow Sunday, prompting him to offer $4,000 reward for information that leads to the shooter.

Chestnut was hunting with his wife between 9 and 10 a.m. north of Spencer, Idaho, when he discovered his 4-year-old Plott Hound, Ruger, dead. He said the dog was important to him and his wife. So important he’s offering a reward roughly the same value of the hunting dog.

“We’ve had a lot of help from family, friends and other hunters,” said Chestnut. “I’m putting up a lot of my own money as well.”

Chestnut filed a police report immediately and contacted Idaho Fish and Game. So far, he’s only had a few tips.

“I don’t think people who do this kind of thing belong in our public lands,” said Chestnut. “These are lands for all of us to enjoy.”

He says the dog was always kind and never posed a threat. Considering the circumstance, he believes his dog was shot intentionally.

“It was done with a bow, but the dog had to be within 30 yards of the person,” said Chestnut. “The dogs wear bright orange collars, it had an L.E.D. collar on it.”
