High school holds Idaho Falls mayoral debate

The Compass Academy held a debate for Idaho Falls’ mayoral candidates Tuesday night, two weeks before election day.

All four candidates fielded questions submitted to the high schoolers by members of the community. The students studied the topics, formed questions and asked the candidates questions from balancing the budget to preserving the city’s historic sites. The four candidates Rebecca Casper, Timothy Downs, Brian Lapray and Sharon D. Parry answered questions for an hour before meeting and greeting those in attendance.

So, what is it that sets these candidates apart from the field?

Casper, a adjunct professor at Brigham Young University-Idaho and Eastern Idaho Technical College, said she has a breadth of experience and has a detailed plan for the city.

Downs, a police officer for the City of Idaho Falls, said he’s had experience in many levels of government as well as administration and business.

Lapray, a doctor and businessman, believes he has the requisite education in business to run the city.

Parry, a city councilwoman, said she has acquired the skills and experience necessary for the job through six years serving on the city council.

There will be another mayoral debate at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the American Heritage Charter School
