Group says there are too few female pilots

A local group is concerned there are not enough women behind the controls of our nation’s planes, and they’re doing something about it.

EAA Chapter 407 President Natalie Bergevin said it starts by getting more girls interested in flying at an early age. Bergevin’s group took dozens of girls on free flights over Idaho Falls Saturday.

“For some reason I think a lot of girls think, ‘Oh, I’m a girl, I can’t do this.’ But some of our best pilots are girls,” said Bergevin.

“I don’t know how to explain it. It was just really fun,” said Myca Lewis, 10, of her first experience in the cockpit.

“I was really, really scared. I thought I was gonna pass out, but it was really fun,” said Desiree Duncan, 14.

Each of the girls who participated in the flights has the opportunity to get free ground-schooling and a free first flight.
