Proposed update to Skier’s Code first in 35 years

The IdahoLegislature sends a revised bill to Gov. Butch Otter, clearing up language and modernizing ski and snowboard laws in Idaho.

So what does this do for those who live for the fresh winter powder?

“They can still be up here enjoying a beautiful day on the slope,” said Mary Reichman, general manager of the Pebble Creek Ski Area.

Reichman said the updates to the bill don’t make skiers, boarders or resorts really change anything.

“It just defines what the sport is all about,” Reichman said. “What people can expect, the kind of hazards that exist on the slopes and the parameter of skiing and boarding in Idaho.”

This is the first update the bill has seen since it was created 35 years ago. Reichman said it’s important this bill is update, clearing who is responsible when it comes to the winter sports and what the rules are while on the slopes.

“Be aware of those around you and be aware of your surroundings,” Reichman said. “And enjoy and have fun.”

She said with all the changes over the past three decades in skiing, boarding and lift equipment, it was definitely important to update the rules for everyone.

“And those really haven’t changed,” Reichman said. “But with the changes in language over time, this just clears things up and makes it easier to understand.”

Other additions to the bill include adding language for sleds and other equipment for people with special needs. The bill continues with the idea that anybody who spends time on the slops is doing so with the full knowledge of any risks involved.
