Potential radio tower to come to Menan

Discussion on construction of a radio tower to be built in the city of Menan continues this week–including a request to change the current city ordinance.

Located on the main corridor through Menan, the proposed radio tower would sit on the fire station property.

The city ordinance currently prohibits construction on anything higher than 35 feet, which restricts plans for this particular tower. A meeting was held last week to request the ordinance be updated to allow for construction.

Mike Miller, Fire Commissioner for the Central Fire Department explained, “It’s not only as a fire district that we need a tower down the road, and we’re not even sure when that tower will be, but cell phone companies, internet companies, if they want wireless solutions in that area, the ordinance currently does not allow for that.”

However, not all of those living in Menan are in favor of this proposed construction, fearing it could decrease resale value and the overall appearance of the city.

Local, Rand Watson stated, “It’s going to be the first thing you see before you even get to town, and that 140 to 180 foot tower sky-rocketing over all the trees, I think there’s another alternative: locate it out at the Menan city Sewer Lagoon.”

Construction has not yet started, and it is unknown how soon it could begin.
