Big Momma: “It’s not a shelter, it’s supportive housing”

After last week’s petitions over the rezoning of a Pocatello lot, Pastor Jacqualine “Big Momma” Thomas, the spearhead of the Big Momma’s Housing project, took some time to respond to those concerned about the project.

“We are supportive housing, it’s so important that we get it out there. It’s not a shelter, it is supportive housing,” Thomas said.

Concerns ranging from noise and traffic to safety were raised by members of the neighborhood, where the Pershing Avenue lot sits, but Thomas feels that they are misunderstanding what she is trying to do.

“Some of the neighbors that I met with on Friday had legitimate concerns. But those concerns would go more for a shelter.”

Thomas emphasized that her project is anything but a shelter. It will offer long-term housing, potentially even permanent housing, for those in need.

But not just anyone can live there. Background checks and drug testing are part of the application process.

Security would be handled with 24-hour surveillance and a live-in guard.

It’s something she’s been working on for several years, but this is her biggest attempt yet. Her original project involved just one house, this one is a three-building apartment complex. The only thing standing between her and her goal is the city’s approval, pending an October 10 meeting.

Thomas is “expecting the green light” at the meeting, but even if she doesn’t get it she’s not going away.

“I’m not here to give up, I’m a fighter. I don’t believe in giving up till I’ve seen the job done,” she said.

If approval is granted her team expects they could have people moving in by as early as this time next year.

Once again addressing those concerned, Thomas said, “I want them to really feel confident that everything they were concerned about, that they would not have those fears with supportive housing from Big Momma.”

Pocatello’s Planning & Zoning Commission will meet to discuss the matter at City Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on October 10.
