Steamboat Geyser nears records with 21st eruption in 2018

The Steamboat Geyser in Yellowstone National Park erupted for the 21st time in 2018 Sunday.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the geyser erupted at 6:54 p.m.

Carolyn Golba captured video of the eruption around 7:30 p.m.

It has been 6 days, 13 hours and 36 minutes since the eruption on Sept. 24.

Yellowstone National Park reports this is the most active year for Steamboat since 1982 when it off 23 times. It also went off 26 times in 1963, 29 times in 1964 and 22 times in 1965.

USGS said the geyser has decided to follow a semi-regular pattern of erupting about every 5 days over the past few weeks.
