Utah police officer will not face charges in fatal shooting

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill says a Cottonwood Heights police officer who fatally shot a 19-year-old robbery suspect will not face charges.

The Deseret News reports Gill announced Tuesday that if officer Casey Davies were charged, he could argue that he used deadly force on Zane Anthony James because he feared he was in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death.

Davies declined to be interviewed as part of the investigation per the advice of his attorney, so the reasons behind his decision to fire his weapon are unknown.

Gill notes in his report that it is Davies’ constitutional right to remain silent.

Davies fired at James in May as police were pursuing him in connection to two robberies.

A pellet gun was found in James’ pocket.
