Cashier’s check scam going around in Oneida County

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam using counterfeit cashier’s checks.

The checks come through priority mail with a check from VyStar Credit Union.

If you have received one, do not cash it.

According to a Facebook post from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Vystar is aware of the counterfeit checks ranging in amounts from $1,950 to $4,950.

Instruction’s with the check tells victims to confirm receipt by sending a text.

They are then instructed to cash or deposit the money and retain anywhere from $200 to $400 for commission and fees.

They later tell the recipient to use the remaining amount to purchase Walmart or Apple Store gift cards.

The Vystar call center can validate whether or not an Official Check is legitimate, at (904) 777-6000.
