Home Depot gives 5K grant to disabled veteran for new roof

Faced with a leaky roof for more than five years, a disabled veteran is finally getting help. Volunteers helped the Pocatello women by replacing and giving her an entirely new roof.

The work is being made possible through a grant from Home Depot’s charitable foundation in conjunction with NeighborWorks Pocatello.

57-year-old Dawn Roberts worked as a nurse for years and served in the Air Force Reserve; however, today she is disabled and wheelchair-bound, and getting around in her house is hard enough. Buying a new roof seemed nearly impossible.

Cheri Tensel, Roberts’ social worker, took to Facebook after she heard about Roberts’ roof problems. Tensel was referred to Home Depo, and that’s when NeighborWorks got involved.

“So early on, Home Depot needed a nonprofit organization in order to get their foundation grant. So NeighborWorks had a small part in it, we’re the nonprofit that helped draw the profit out from Home Depot,” Executive Director of NeighborWorks Mark Deliquist said.

Home Depot’s charitable foundation with NeighborWorks Pocatello was able to provide $5,000 toward this project. “Just saw a need there, and some partners came together. It’s just been really gratifying to see it all come together,” Deliquist said.
