Heber Hatchets set to open Pocatello location Friday

Residents of Southeastern Idaho will have another fun family activity to try this weekend.

Heber Hatchets Axe Throwing is planning to officially open its doors on Friday.

Heber offers a variety of different axe throwing activities, with four distinct ways to throw: double-handed, single-handed, under-handed and the over-handed under-hand.

“We expect people coming in groups, we encourage the more the merrier,” manager Jacob Hall said.

Hall, who is currently studying at ISU, noticed the rising popularity of the activity and wanted to get involved. Now, he’s excited to offer another activity to the City of Pocatello.

“We already have skating and bowling, which are kind of our go-to events, and this just adds one more thing to the list of different entertainment activities and an individual can do on a weeknight or on a weekend.”

As one would imagine, a business that deals with sharp objects has safety as its top priority. Heber makes it easy with an acronym.

“It’s T.H.R.O.W.: T stands for throw together, H stands for leave the hatchet in the hanger, R stands for don’t reach for a moving axe, the O stands for stand outside the lines if you’re not throwing and the W, which is most important, sometimes the general public forgets, is to wear close-toed shoes,” Hall explained.

Chain-link fences, throwing lines and rubber mulch are among the other ways safety is addressed. But another big focus is making sure participants are sober.

“We don’t think throwing under the influence is the best idea with sharp objects,” Hall explained. “We just want to make sure our customers are safe and that the individuals throwing are safe themselves.”

Although the store was putting on the finishing touches Thursday, Heber will open its doors for normal business on Friday.

All are welcome to come and throw, but Hall recommends throwers be over the age of 11.
