SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A fast-moving fire fed by strong winds burned two homes in a hillside neighborhood in the city of Oakland where roughly 500 people were ordered to evacuate. That’s according to the Oakland Fire Department on Friday. Several other homes were damaged by smoke and water. The blaze grew to 14 acres on Friday afternoon in the span of about three hours before crews stopped it from advancing. A California utility shut off power in 19 counties in the northern and central part of the state as a major “diablo wind” — notorious in autumn for its hot, dry gusts — spiked the risk of a wildfire.
