Is a husky right for you?

BLACKFOOT, Idaho (KIFI) - The Blackfoot Animal Shelter is reaching out to the community asking people to think twice before breeding or buying a husky.

In a Facebook post, the shelter writes, "Huskies are everywhere, being re-homed, given away, or being euthanized in shelters."

They say huskies are not apartment dogs. In fact, very few people can actually handle huskies and give them all they need.

The shelter writes, "they (huskies) need an area in which they can roam around and explore. If you live in an apartment, or plan to keep your new pet as a 'house dog' a husky is probably not for you.

The problem is local breeders continue to breed and sell the dogs without considering if the family they sell to can care for the animal. Many of the dogs end up in local animal shelters.

The Blackfoot Animal Shelter alone has seven huskies in its kennels many of which have been waiting for months to be adopted.

"We have so many that nobody wants them. We post them over and over again and they(Animal Shelter Visitors) just they see the same dog every time," Blackfoot Animal Shelter volunteer Cassidy MccAmmon said.

The animal shelter directors ask people, "please do your research on the breed before adopting, buying, or breeding dogs."

"Stop breeding dogs and take care of your dogs," MccAmmon said. "Keep them inside, build your fence up, don't adopt dogs that you don't want."
