CAIRO (AP) — Russia’s foreign minister has met with Sudan’s military rulers as the nations seek to deepen economic and political ties. Sudan marked the final leg of the minister’s tour of Africa. Sudan’s state-run SUNA news agency says the minister held discussions with two top Sudanese ruling generals on Thursday. In a news conference that followed, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov acknowledged the presence of Russian-owned mining companies in Sudan. He was asked about the presence in Sudan of the Wagner Group, a military contractor owned by an oligarch with ties to Russia’s president. Lavrov said private Russian military companies operate in Africa at the request of African governments.
