West Texas county bans travel on its roads to help someone seeking an abortion

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — County commissioners in Lubbock County, Texas, have voted to ban transporting another person on its roads to receive an abortion. The commission voted 3-0 Monday to declare itself a “Sanctuary County for the Unborn,” making it the largest of four Texas and two New Mexico counties to approve the ordinance. The commissioners rejected requests by the county judge and the district attorney’s office to postpone the vote in order to study the proposal. The ordinance does not apply to a person seeking an abortion, but allows citizens to sue anyone who assists a woman in obtaining an abortion in Lubbock County or by traveling through Lubbock County.
