Wyoming sheriff’s official resigns amid wrongful death suit
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A Wyoming sheriff’s corporal facing a wrongful death lawsuit in the killing of an unarmed mentally ill man in 2018 has resigned.
Albany County sheriff's officials say Derek Colling left his job Wednesday.
He was a patrol deputy when he shot and killed 39-year-old Robert “Robbie” Ramirez after a traffic stop in Laramie in 2018.
A grand jury found Colling didn’t commit involuntary manslaughter.
In court documents, Colling denies allegations in the lawsuit, though he acknowledges shooting Ramirez.
The lawsuit says the sheriff's office hired Colling in 2012 after he shot two people in the line of duty and was fired from the police department in Las Vegas.
