Idaho State falls to UNLV 52-21 in season opener

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (KIFI) - The Idaho State football team started their 2022 campaign on the losing end in a 52-21 defeat to UNLV on Saturday afternoon at Allegiant Stadium.

The Bengals were able to make it a game in the first, 35 unanswered points in the second quarter sealed this one for the Rebels.

ISU Quarterback Tyler Vander Waal went 7-13 for 130 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception.

Backup Hunter Hays impressed in relief going 7-12 for 61 yards and two late touchdowns, with one on the ground and one through the air.

Bengals Wide Receiver Xavier Guillory led the Bengals in receiving with 73 yards and a touchdown.

Jalen Johnson had 69 yards of his own, including a 55-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.

DJ Hagler carried the defense with eight tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss.

The Bengals (0-1) are back on the field on Sept. 10 at San Diego State.
