Stoddard’s late kick secures narrow victory for Madison

REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI) – Madison defeated the Middleton Vikings 10-9 after Brenner Stoddard kicked a 48-yard game-winning field goal with 12 seconds remainingin the fourth quarter.

The late kick capped off a tight second half after Madison held a 7-6 lead during the third quarter. Defensive stops on both sides kept the score close until the end.

During the start of third quarter, Madison quarterback Hawke Cordero launched a deep pass to Brahm Thompson for a large gain to put Madison in scoring position. Middleton's defense held firm near the end zone, stopping the drive and forcing a field goal attempt. Dustin Kaseburg came up with a block on the attempt to keep Madison ahead 7-6.

On the ensuing possession for Middleton, quarterback Briar Baughman was caught in the pocket and brought down by three Madison defenders for a sack. The play stalled the drive and forced the Vikings to punt.

Madison tried to expand the field on its next offensive series as Cordero threw toward Thompson. Middleton defender Kaden Heffner broke up the pass attempt. A few plays later, Madison went for Thompson down the same sideline, and Heffner provided coverage again to break up the second pass attempt. Madison will take on Mountain View next on September 11th.
