Tracking gusty winds and major temp drop this weekend

Visitors heading to the Eastern Idaho State Fair this weekend will experience a dramatic weather shift as warm Friday conditions give way to a colder, windier pattern. Weekend daytime high temperatures across the Snake River Plain will range from the 60s to the lower 80s.

The changing weather pattern coincides with fair events across the region. Ahead of the incoming cold front, a Red Flag Warning is in effect Friday from noon until 9 p.m. due to low humidity levels and strong winds creating dangerous fire conditions.

Morning cloud cover on Friday will clear to bring increasing sunshine, with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s to lower 80s. Local authorities advise extreme caution regarding outdoor fires, open flames and machinery capable of producing sparks due to the high risk of rapid fire spread.

A low-pressure system arriving Saturday will push temperatures down into the 60s while bringing strong winds to the area. Sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph are forecast for Saturday afternoon, with potential gusts reaching 40 mph or higher. The probability of rain on Saturday remains very low.

Cool conditions will continue Sunday, with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to near 70. Wind speeds are expected to decrease relative to Saturday, though breezy conditions will persist. The likelihood of showers will rise late Sunday, with most precipitation expected to stay in the mountains.

Overnight temperatures throughout the weekend will drop into the upper 30s and near 40 degrees. The cold nighttime conditions will particularly affect those camping at the fairgrounds after sunset.

Warmer temperatures are expected to return next week as a zonal flow pattern establishes itself following the passage of the low-pressure system.
