Tracking seasonal weather for the weekend and another big change next week

High pressure takes control of our weather, setting us up for a stretch of crisp mornings, sunshine, and milder afternoons. After those chilly starts, temperatures will climb into the 60s today, right around seasonal averages for mid-October. That means a little fall layering goes a long way: grab the jacket or hoodie on your way out the door, especially for those early commutes, school drop-offs, and morning dog walks. By afternoon, you'll be much more comfortable enjoying the sunshine outdoors.

We're looking at a great setup for weekend plans across the region, whether you're heading to a pumpkin patch, taking a scenic drive, getting in some yardwork, or enjoying local fall events. Saturday brings a little more warmth, with breezes picking up during the afternoon. If you're planning outdoor decorations, working in the yard, or spending time in the mountains, keep those increasing winds in mind. Sunday is shaping up to be another terrific day to get outside, with pleasant conditions before our next weather change approaches.

By Monday, we'll start noticing more clouds moving in as the next weather system approaches. The pattern looks like a classic fall setup for Idaho: temperatures warm ahead of the system, then cool down as a front moves through. Shower chances begin increasing Monday into Tuesday, with precipitation probabilities around 40% across much of the area, and better chances in the mountains. The higher elevations could see more active weather, so keep an eye on conditions if you're planning a trip into the mountains or heading toward western Wyoming.

Behind that front, we'll trade some of the mild afternoon warmth for cooler temperatures, with highs dropping back into the 50s by the middle of next week. You'll want to keep the warmer layers handy, and have a rain jacket or umbrella ready for Tuesday's outdoor plans. The National Weather Service's local forecast products are the best place to monitor how the timing and coverage of those showers develop.

The bottom line: Enjoy the sunshine while we've got it! Friday through Sunday looks like the better window for fall festivals, outdoor recreation, scenic drives, and getting those last yardwork projects finished before colder, unsettled weather returns. Mornings will still feel chilly, so dress in layers, enjoy the afternoon sunshine, and plan for a cooler, potentially wetter stretch as we head into the new week.
