Rexburg remembers 9/11

“Being so young and experiencing it, I didn’t quite understand, but as I grow older I understand the impact it had on us,” said Rexburg neighbor, Mackenzie Glover.

September 11 is a day many of us won’t soon forget, and although it’s been 18 years since that tragic day, for neighbors in Rexburg, this visual reminder still sparks a response.

“It’s kind of emotional to see all of the flags and to remember the events of that day,” said memorial walk visitor, Amber Julander.

The Madison Fire Department placed American flags all around Porter Park. Designed as a self-guided tour, neighbors could walk among the flags and read stories of the impactful events that led up to almost three thousand lives being lost.

“A lot of good men, a lot of good women, people who were just there to help, they answered the call. And in doing so, they lost their lives and I think we just need to remember that’s always a possibility, but it doesn’t keep us from answering the call when it comes in again,” said Madison Fire Department’s assistant chief, Troy Cemiskin.

Never forget. Two words that are echoed throughout our country on September 11, but for some, the memory comes through others.

“My son is four almost five, and it’s something that he is never going to experience first hand, at least that event, and so I feel like it’s important for him to see and for him to know what happened that basically changed our nation and brought our nation together at that time in such a horrible event,” said Julander.

For young Emory, the flags alone bring the feeling of something special, and respect.

“They’re pretty cool, and when we drove past them, they were all over the place. Other people are looking at them and that’s why we have to be quiet,” memorial walk visitor, Emory.

“We wanted to honor that, and we wanted to bring that tradition of honoring our own, here to Rexburg,” said Cemiskin.
